Paul brings to GHD more than 35 years’ experience managing strategic partnerships, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) programmes and major transport technology projects across the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East and Australia.
Pauls experience in Smart Motorways/Freeways goes back to the UK in the mid 2000s, where he was involved as a consultant on the first operational smart motorways in the UK, firstly with the dynamic hard shoulder and then with all lane running (ALR) in the UK. He also oversaw the implementation of ramp metering on the M3/M27 corridors for the Highways Agency, when in the local authority.
On route to Australia, he oversaw the design of over 450km of new smart expressways in the State of Qatar, and delivery of an ITS Masterplan and their ITS Standards/Specifications and deployment manual.
More recently, he was the Technical design authority for Main Roads WA, of the latest Smart Freeway/Motorway in Australia, which is in Perth, WA (opened mid 2020), and currently leads GHD Smart Transport work focusing on the intelligent use of technology for Australia’s road networks. GHD are currently involved in the latest Smart Motorway and Freeway designs and implementation in NSW, SA, TAS and WA and assist from design through to operational readiness and Paul is the lead technical advisor on a recent award to GHD, by Austroads, for the NEG6270 Best practice in Smart Motorways Operations.
